Eagles

Eagles is a helicopter simulator demo written for DOS in 1996-1997, back in my university years. It is written in C++ and assembly and runs up to 640x480 in indexed color modes. All the basic graphics stuff is hardcoded - polygons, Gouraud-shading, etc. It sports the following stuff that was somewhat interesting back then:

  • The terrain is a heighfield like in Comanche (1992), but smoother shading and geometry, plus level of detail.
  • The cockpit is fully 3D, you can look around while flying.
  • Semi-transparent objects (like rocket smoke).

It does not run under WinXP any more, but wait - it runs great with DosBox! It runs even on my Mac, so you have no excuse not to try it out:

  • Download the demo (1.7M). As said, needs DOS but runs fine in DosBox. Just uncompress the zip somewhere and use the DosBox mount command. Readme contains all keys and other stuff you may need to know.
  • Download the sources (208K). Source is GPLv2, you can get the data files from the demo. I am not sure if it can still be compiled, originally it required Watcom C++ 10.0.
I wrote an article (PDF, 1.3M) about Eagles that was presented at CESCG'97 by Balázs Csébfalvi.
